Fact: The recipe is part of the Sassy Water Diet, which promises weight loss through (1) a calorie-restricted diet, (2) drinking 10 glasses of “sassy water”, and (3) no exercise.

To keep it simple: there is zero scientific evidence that this diet works.

People who support this diet say that the ginger (in the original recipe) and mint aid digestion and reduces constipation; lemon works as a diuretic and promotes pH balance; and cucumbers contain erepsin, an enzyme.

Y’know what else is good for constipation? - Prunes … and, I don’t see anyone supporting a prunes diet. Why? Marketing. You can’t call prunes “sassy” -

Your don’t need lemon to restore a “healthy pH” - your body knows exactly what its pH should be, and is constantly making adjustments to ensure it’s in the correct range.

Lemon doesn’t have any real diuretic properties - but, it is anti-bacterial and a great natural cleaning product! (Mix with vinegar and a bit of warm water!)

The enzymes in cucumber? They’re going to denature as soon as they reach your stomach acid. Besides … your body naturally produces erepsin.

Mint has diuretic effects … but, if you’re drinking 10 cups of water a day, you’ll be peeing enough. Mint’s main medicinal use is anti-itch and an insect repellent.

(OK … almost all of it’s hogwash. Ginger is known to aid in gastrointestinal functioning. Evidence suggests that it can bind to human serotonin receptors; reduce free radicals; ease exercise-related muscle pain; reduce colon inflammation; treat nausea; and prevent diabetic cataracts. In short: it’s pretty awesome stuff.)

If drinking this water does make you lose weight, it’s most likely because the water is (1) filling you up, thus reducing the amount of food you eat, and (2) replacing high-calorie drinks, like pop and sugar-filled coffee confections. You’re able to get the same effects by drinking boring, ordinary water sans ginger, lemon, cucumber, and mint.
